Art Deco Weekend is one of South Florida's most well-known and highly attended festivals. The 32nd annual Art Deco Weekend will include lectures by leading scholars, films highlighting the 1930s, musical attractions and a parade, as well as performances and activities for children.
The weekend begins with a keynote lecture on Thursday, January 15th and culminates in a street festival January 16-18, 2009. Guests may attend musical, theatrical and dance performances, as well as participate in a number of guided tours, attend lectures and film screenings, and browse Ocean Drive lined with vendors of antiques and collectibles from the Art Deco and mid-twentieth century eras. There will be paintings, sculpture, jewelry and photography, along with a variety of food vendors to suit every taste.
The Art Deco Weekend Festival was started in 1976 by the Miami Design Preservation League to attract visitors to Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District and to raise awareness and appreciation of the arts and culture of the Art Deco era (approx. 1925-1945).
What to Expect
Miami Design Preservation League will be presenting the 32nd annual Art Deco Weekend from January 16 through 18, 2009. The theme for the 2009 event is Down Argentine Way: Deco o Vino o Tango, exploring the rich culture of Argentina. Art Deco found a home throughout Argentina, but especially so in the broad avenues, gracious neighborhoods, and luxurious movie palaces of the capitol city of Buenos Aires.
